"이스라엘의 파수꾼들은 맹인이요 다 무지하며 벙어리 개들이라 짖지 못하며 다 꿈꾸는 자들이요 누워 있는 자들이요 잠자기를 좋아하는 자들이니" (사 56:10)

동성애 관련 신학적 갈등이 최고조에 달했을 당시, 연합감리교회(UMC)는 단일 교단 체제를 유지하기 위한 방책으로 이른바 ‘빅 텐트(Big Tent)’ 모델을 천명했다. 이는 전통주의, 중도파, 진보파가 하나의 제도적 울타리 안에서 상호 공존하며 신학적 다양성을 용인하는 것을 골자로 했다. 교단은 구성원들의 이탈을 방지하기 위해 어떠한 신학적 포지션도 수용하겠다는 전향적인 약속을 제시한 바 있다. 그러나 전통적인 신학적 확신을 지키려는 이들에게 그 약속은 결국 허울 좋은 껍데기에 불과했다.

작금의 현실은 당초 제시되었던 이상적 플랫폼의 기대치와 정반대의 결과를 보여준다. 갈등의 근본 원인에 대한 정면 돌파 없이 제도적 통합만을 유예했던 '빅 텐트' 정책은, 교단 분리가 본격화된 지 3년이 지나는 이 시점에서 교단 내부 지도자들의 거대한 거짓말이었음이 속속들이 드러나고 있다.

교단 분리 후 UMC는 모든 관점을 균형 있게 포용하는 공간이 되기는커녕, 자유주의 신학을 따르는 진보파의 승리와 거대한 교단 권력의 독점으로 이어졌다. 지난 3년 동안 수많은 이들은 핵심적인 신학적 경계선들이 끝없이 밀려나는 것을 목격했고, 이는 결국 상호 신뢰와 언약(Covenant)의 파기로 귀결되었다.

장정(Book of Discipline)의 집행은 일관성을 잃었고, 마침내 2024년 4월 28일부터 5월 3일까지 미국 노스캐롤라이나주 샬럿에서 열린 개회 총회(General Conference)에서 UMC는 1972년 이후 장정에 명시되어 있던 “동성애 행위는 기독교 가르침과 호환되지 않는다”라는 문구를 52년 만에 삭제했다. 그리고 동성애자 안수 허용과 동성 결혼 허용을 본격적으로 단행하기 시작했다.

그 후 교단의 최우선 과제가 완전히 바뀌면서, '빅 텐트'는 더 이상 모두를 위한 피난처가 아니라 전통적 신앙을 주변부로 몰아내기 위한 강요된 타협안이 되어버렸다. 이러한 영적 붕괴를 보여주는 가장 명백하고 부인할 수 없는 증거는, 최근 UMC 고등교육국(University Senate)이 애즈버리 신학대학원(Asbury Theological Seminary)을 UMC 목회자 후보생 양성을 위한 인가 학교 명단에서 공식적으로 제외해 버린 사건이다.

애즈버리 신학교는 지난 수십 년간 교단을 위해 신실하고 성경에 뿌리를 둔 목회자들을 배출해 온 핵심적인 신학적 엔진이었다. 그러나 애즈버리가 '결혼은 오직 한 남자와 한 여자의 거룩한 결합'이라는 성경적이고 근본적인 신념을 굳건히 지켰다는 이유만으로, 교단은 이 학교를 일방적으로 퇴출시켰다. 역사적인 기독교 교리에 타협하기를 거부한 교육기관을 내쫓음으로써, UMC는 자신들의 '빅 텐트' 안에 교단을 탄생시켰던 바로 그 성경적 토대가 설 자리는 더 이상 없음을 천하에 공표한 셈이다.

더 나아가 지난 과정을 되돌아보면, '빅 텐트'라는 수사는 교단 탈퇴 운동을 억누르기 위해 전략적으로 사용된 기만의 무기였음이 더욱 명백해진다. 위기가 최고조에 달했던 2023년 말까지, 교단 지도부는 동성애(LGBTQ) 문제로 진통을 겪고 있는 개교회들의 발을 묶고 혼란을 주기 위해 끊임없이 화합을 외치며 '다양성을 포용하는 넓은 품'이라는 환상을 심어주었다.

UMC 교단 지도자와 목사들은 자신들이 무슨 짓을 하고 있는지 정확히 알고 있었다. 개교회가 재산을 가지고 떠날 수 있도록 허용한 특별 조항인 '장정 2553조'가 2023년 12월 31일부로 완전히 만료된다는 사실을 말이다. 그들은 고민하는 전통주의자들에게 "모두가 거할 자리가 있을 것"이라는 빈 약속으로 안심시키며 교묘하게 시간을 끌었다. 그것은 결코 진정성 있는 신학적 비전이 아니었다. 합법적인 탈퇴의 문이 쾅 하고 닫히기 전까지, 가능한 한 많은 교회를 교단 안에 묶어두기 위해 치밀하게 계산된 관료적 전략에 불과했다.

이 덫에 걸려든 가장 가슴 아픈 피해는 ‘빅 텐트'라는 약속을 믿었거나, 혹은 2023년 마감 시한 전에 분열된 교인들을 이끌고 탈퇴 투표를 통과시키지 못해 교단에 남게 된 보수파 목회자들과 성도들에게 고스란히 돌아갔다.

탈퇴의 창문이 닫히자마자 교단 조직의 보복은 노골적으로 시작되었다. 교단에 남은 수많은 신실한 전통주의 목회자들은 체계적으로 파송을 거부당하거나, 강단을 빼앗기거나, 사역을 아예 포기하도록 만들기 위해 고안된 징벌적이고 자립 불가능한 임지로 강제 파송되었다.

설상가상으로 UMC는 최근 목회자 주택 및 파송 보장 제도(Guaranteed Appointment)마저 폐지하기로 결의함으로써, 이 목회자들이 가질 수 있었던 마지막 역사적 보호막마저 걷어차 버렸다. 이 지도자들에게 '빅 텐트'는 사라진 지 오래이며, 도리어 성경적 신념을 버리고 UMC의 기조와 신학을 따르든지 아니면 맨몸으로 떠나든지 양자택일을 강요하는 '제도적 감옥'이 되어버렸다.

그 결과 막판에 몰려 휘몰아친 다급한 교단 탈퇴 행렬, 신앙을 지키기 위한 피 말리는 법정 싸움, 교회들 간의 극심한 갈등과 개교회들의 아픈 결단, 그리고 완전히 깨어져 버린 관계들은 그 '빅 텐트'라는 모델이 철저한 실패작이자 허황된 거짓이었음을 적나라하게 증명한다. 수많은 교회에 있어서 UMC를 떠난 것은 결코 분열을 원해서가 아니었다. 끊임없는 제도적 갈등에서 벗어나 신학적 정체성을 지키고, 선명한 교리적 경계를 보존하며, 오직 복음 전도 사명에만 전념할 수 있는 유일한 길이었기 때문이다.

현재 글로벌감리교회(GMC)는 놀라울 정도로 빠르게 성장하는 교단이다. 출범 후 불과 3년 만에 이미 7,000개가 넘는 교회가 동참했으며, 미국뿐만 아니라 전 세계 모든 글로벌 지역에서 폭발적인 성장을 거듭하고 있다. 글로벌감리교회는 하나님의 성경적 목회를 꿈꾸며 영적으로 깨어 말씀을 선포하는 교회다. 세상이 타락하고 영적으로 몰락해 가는 이 마지막 때에, 침묵하지 않고 소리 높여 외치며 "하나님의 나라가 가까웠으니 회개하라"고 선포하는 교회다.

The UMC's 'Big Tent' is a fat Lie

"His watchmen are blind, they are all ignorant; they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber." (Isaiah 56:10)

When theological conflicts over homosexuality reached their peak, the United Methodist Church (UMC) proclaimed the so-called "Big Tent" model as a way to keep the denomination unified. The main idea was that traditionalists, centrists, and progressives could coexist within a single institutional boundary, allowing for theological diversity. To prevent member churches from leaving, leadership promised to accommodate all theological stances. However, for those trying to uphold traditional, biblical convictions, that promise turned out to be nothing more than an empty shell.

Today's reality shows the exact opposite of what was promised. The "Big Tent" policy—which merely delayed the inevitable by avoiding the root cause of the conflict—is now being exposed as a massive lie told by denominational leaders, especially now that three years have passed since the denominational split began.

Instead of becoming a balanced space that embraces all perspectives, the post-split UMC has turned into a total victory for progressive theology and a monopoly of institutional power. Over the past three years, many have watched core theological boundaries constantly being pushed back, ultimately resulting in a broken covenant and a loss of mutual trust.

The enforcement of the Book of Discipline lost all consistency. Finally, at the General Conference held in Charlotte, North Carolina, from April 28 to May 3, 2024, the UMC removed the 52-year-old language stating that "the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching." With that, they officially began ordaining openly LGBTQ+ clergy and allowing same-sex marriages.

As the denomination’s top priorities completely shifted, the "Big Tent" stopped being a sanctuary for everyone. Instead, it became a forced compromise used to push traditional faith to the fringes. The clearest, undeniable proof of this spiritual collapse is the UMC University Senate’s recent decision to officially remove Asbury Theological Seminary from the list of approved schools for training UMC ministerial candidates.

For decades, Asbury has been a vital theological engine, faithfully producing Bible-based pastors for the denomination. Yet, simply because Asbury held firmly to the biblical, foundational belief that "marriage is a sacred union between one man and one woman," the denomination abruptly cut ties with the school. By pushing out an institution that refused to compromise on historical Christian doctrines, the UMC has made it loud and clear that the very biblical foundation that birthed the denomination no longer has a place inside their "Big Tent."

Furthermore, looking back at the entire process, it becomes even more obvious that the phrase "Big Tent" was a strategic weapon of deception used to suppress the church disaffiliation movement. Until the end of 2023, when the crisis was at its peak, denominational leadership constantly preached unity and painted an illusion of an "inclusive and diverse community." Their real goal was to tie down and confuse local churches struggling with the LGBTQ+ issue.

The UMC leaders and bishops knew exactly what they were doing. They knew very well that Paragraph 2553 of the Book of Discipline—the special provision allowing local churches to leave with their property—would completely expire on December 31, 2023. They bought time by reassuring conflicted traditionalists with empty promises, whispering that "there will be a place for everyone." It was never a sincere theological vision. It was a calculated, bureaucratic strategy to trap as many churches as possible inside the denomination before the legal exit door slammed shut.

The most heartbreaking victims of this trap are the traditionalist pastors and congregations who either believed the "Big Tent" promise or simply failed to pass a disaffiliation vote before the 2023 deadline.

As soon as the exit window closed, institutional retaliation began in earnest. Numerous faithful, traditionalist pastors remaining in the UMC have been systematically denied appointments, stripped of their pulpits, or forcibly reassigned to punitive, financially unsustainable churches designed to make them give up their ministry altogether.

To make matters worse, the UMC recently voted to eliminate the historical Guaranteed Appointment system for pastors, stripping away their last remaining institutional protection. For these leaders, the "Big Tent" is long gone. Instead, it has become an "institutional prison" forcing them into a harsh ultimatum: abandon your biblical convictions and conform to the UMC's new theology, or walk away empty-handed.

As a result, the frantic rush of churches trying to escape at the last minute, the exhausting legal battles to protect church property, the deep divisions within congregations, and the completely broken relationships all prove that the "Big Tent" model was a total failure and a complete lie. For many congregations, leaving the UMC was never about wanting division. It was the only way to escape endless institutional conflict, protect their theological identity, preserve clear doctrinal boundaries, and focus entirely on the mission of the Gospel.
